From Humble Beginnings to Community Leadership

In the 1980s, Hong Kong’s Muslim community dispersed across the city. More Muslims were moving into the New Territories, creating a need for a unified organization. United Muslim Association of Hong Kong(UMAH) was founded by visionary leaders like Haji Omar Ramju Sadick to address the gap.

1987

Meeting for Welfare Projects: The First Chairman, Haji Omar Ramju Sadick discussed community welfare projects with Mr. Mohamed Alli Din together with 5 other members. However, no concrete plans were realized at that time.

1991

Revival of UMAH: The association was revived with 25 core members. Mr. Mohamed Alli Din was elected the Chairman of UMAH.

1990–1992

  • Planning for Elderly Home: After Haji Omar Ramju Sadick passed away, Mr. Mohamed Alli Din researched and negotiated for a Care and Attention Home.
  • Donation from Sadick’s Will: Haji Sadick’s family informed UMAH of a dedicated fund in the will of Haji Omar Ramju Sadick for the establishment of an elderly home by UMAH. The fund was officially received in 1994.

1992

December 21: Tuen Mun site (700 sqm) granted by the Housing Authority for the establishment of an elderly home.

1993

  • March 1Haji Omar Ramju Sadick Care and Attention Home, the first Muslim elderly home in Hong Kong started to operate.
  • November: UMAH registers as a Charitable Organisation in Hong Kong.

1994

  • Elderly Home at Full Capacity: Government hospitals refer patients; 52 residents (Muslim and non-Muslim).
  • Sadick’s Fund Received: Will donation officially endorsed to UMAH.
